The final school holiday weekend is upon us – pack your brolly and rain mac and your sun cream and sunglasses  – because who knows what weather we’re in for at the biggest family event, Medieval Merriment, taking place between 11am and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The sights, sounds and smells of Ye Olde Englande will bring alive Rochester Castle Gardens, as stallholders teach us those long forgotten crafts and soldiers re-enact battles to be lords of the Keep. New for this year is a fashion show and live theatre, including some of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

If you want the family get stuck in and make a difference instead, why not help out at the Broomhill Park Task Day on Sunday and ensure Strood’s community park retains its Green Flag status?

For art and music lovers, Singapora Lounge is the venue tonight for Willow Promotions exhibition by local artist Sarah Knibbs, accompanied by live music from five different bands and artists. The prolific Andy White will be in residence at St. Mary’s Social Club for The Friday Night Alternative and the ever cool Stuart Turner and the Flat Earth Society will be at The Nag’s Head, in a Motherboy production which also features The Baron Von Marlon and Punching Swans (formerly Randy Marsh – I dunno, maybe he had a bad experience down at Sun Pier?)

Saturday evening and the Beacon Court takes you back in time with Skatonic at 8pm, while The Two Brewers host The Nigel Legge Band on Sunday afternoon at 4pm and The Man of Kent welcome you to their Jam Night later on.

For something a little quieter, the current Francis Iles Gallery exhibition is ‘Watercolours, Oils and Sketches  from the Master” by Rowland Hilder: “I have spent over fifty years painting the land, the sea and the sky, and I feel pure and simple exhilaration with each new painting I begin …With a bit more time I could get the hang of this!”

Dot Cafe also has an exhibition beginning this weekend. Jane Furst is Artist of the Month and has previously had work exhibited in the Barbican, London and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew.

What will you be doing this weekend?  Share your event with us in a comment and we’ll add it to the calendar 🙂
